i have a ibm desktop computer that had windows 95 the hard drive quit working and also had some bad sectors proly caused by failing hard drive.(?) so i used a hard drive out of a old computer with windows 2000 on it , i wiped the the hard drive and cmos but now i cant get the xp o.s. disk to load error says i'm missing ntldr but shouldn't i be able to get this from the o.s. disk.i have set startup to boot from cdrom. maybe someone could tell me the steps to start from the beginning when intalling a new hard drive and setting up the o.s. any ideas will be appreciated.

been there done that, I know how aggrivating it can be. My recommendation is to get a copy of windows 98 still the best in my opinion. I tried xp - a virus waiting to happen. If you can back up all your files on disk; do so, then wipe out your hard drive via C:format, reinstall windows 98 and you will never, ever have a problem again. WE do what we can to help our members! Stay away from M1 and his basement. You will understand one day.

ok here is where i am right now the machine boots and says "os not installed insert set up disk and press any key" now the disk i'm using has worked several times but wont start when i load it .also i just realized it only has a cd rom and my xp disk is on dvd disk.so i guess im gonna need something on cd.

windows 98,im still laughingmaybe he should do a fresh install of MS-DOS while he is at it

ok make sure CD is in computer, now shut the computer down wait about 1 minute then start computer back up ok heres the tricky part it might take a couple tries keep pushing the Delete button see if that brings up your boot menu, if that dont work try the ESC top left botton on keyboard but everytime u need to shut down computer and wait 1 minute and last one is press F1 key now with all of these you have to keep pushing the key dont just press it once keep pressing it tell you are able to get to your boot menu or your Bios settings, what you want to do is set your CDrom to the first boot so when you start th computer its going to boot from the CD first. try that see if it works.

if you have a dvd player hook it up unhook your cd player and hookup a dvd up.

also u might want to see if u have a floppy u can hookup if dvd and cd don`t work then find a floppy boot disk so it can load the drivers.

cmon gimme a break this is not my main computer i'm just trying playin around with old machines trying to get a better understanding I need something to do til its bright again. oh yeah i hate dos
