I do not know about all cable companys, however I can tell you that you can flash a surfbord modem and it can work for free. You have to solder in a jtag slot and rewrite the software. It is not a easy process and you have a high likelyhood of turning your modem into a brick. A better option would be a d link cable modem. It can be flashed throgh a standard cat 5 network cable with a tftp program. The only worning I feel I need to give you is that DOCIS 2 is the new way they are comunicating with these modems and with comcast at least if you get these modems to work they usualy end up back in wall guard quickly. The normal reason for getting cought is uncaping the modem. I currently have 3 modems that are "free to use". 1 is a rca, another is dlink and the last is surfbord. Many modems can be hacked. Not just the surfbord. The cable companys are aware of this though and taking steps to stop it like the captive port that comcast started using about 6 months ago.
