1900 Actress Natalie Schafer (Lovey Howell on Gilligan's Island) is born. She dies in 1991 at the age of 90.
1911 Actor-musician Roy Rogers is born. He dies in 1998.
1913 Actress Vivien Leigh (Gone With The Wind, A Streetcar Named Desire) is born. She dies in 1967.
1935 The board game Monopoly goes on sale.
1946 Singer-guitarist Gram Parsons (the Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers) is born. He dies in 1973.
1953 The movie How To Marry A Millionaire, starring Marilyn Monroe, Betty Grable, and Lauren Bacall, opens.
1968 Richard M. Nixon defeats Hubert H. Humphrey and is elected president of the United States.
1970 Eric Clapton's new band, Derek & the Dominos, shoots their TV debut for The Johnny Cash Show.
1977 Ozzy Osbourne quits Black Sabbath, only to rejoin a few weeks later. He eventually quits again and launches a successful solo career.
1983 "One Thing Leads To Another" by the Fixx peaks at Number Four on the pop chart.
1983 "Uptown Girl" by Billy Joel hits Number One on the U.K. pop chart, where it stays for five weeks.
1987 The Grateful Dead shoot a video for "Throwing Stones" at an abandoned school in Oakland, California.
1988 "Kokomo" by the Beach Boys hits Number One on the pop chart.
1988 "Never Tear Us Apart" by INXS peaks at Number Seven on the pop chart.
1989 Sting opens on Broadway in the role of Macheath in The Threepenny Opera at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in New York City.
1991 Actor Fred MacMurray (Double Indemnity, The Caine Mutiny, My Three Sons) dies at age 83.
1994 "What's The Frequency, Kenneth?" by R.E.M. peaks at Number 21 on the pop chart.
1994 Cross Road by Bon Jovi enters the album chart at its peak position of Number Eight.
1999 Van Halen announces that Gary Cherone is no longer the lead singer of the band. The official statement calls the move "both mutual and amicable," and guitarist Edward Van Halen says, "Gary is a brother, and he and I will continue to have a personal and musical relationship."
2000 The Who appears as a special guest on the season premiere of The Simpsons.
2002 Sax player Clarence Clemons has emergency surgery in Houston to correct a detached retina, which forces the postponement of a couple of Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band shows.
2003 Righteous Brothers singer Bobby Hatfield dies at age 63 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, from heart failure triggered by acute cocaine intoxication.
