World's largest diesel engine

WORLD'S LARGEST DIESEL ENGINE
The Wartsila-Sulzer RTA96-C turbocharged two-stroke diesel engine is the most powerful and most efficient prime-mover in the world today. The Aioi Works of Japan 's Diesel United, Ltd built the first engines and is where some of these pictures were taken. It is available in 6 through 14 cylinder versions, all are inline engines. These engines were designed primarily for very large container ships. Ship owners like a single engine/single propeller design and the new generation of larger container ships needed a bigger engine to propel them. The cylinder bore is just under 38" and the stroke is just over 98". Each cylinder displaces 111,143 cubic inches (1820 liters) and produces 7780 horsepower. Total displacement comes out to 1,556,002 cubic inches (25,480 liters) for the fourteen cylinder version.

i have read about these, if you look in the picture you will see "panels" where you would normally see access plates on a heavy-duty diesel, but those plates on these bad boys are actaully DOORS! A service tech can actually climb into the crankcase for inspections. Imagine the machining equipment used to turn out the crank and other large precision parts. Humans have gone nuts!

diesel?

Am I to understand that these are two stroke? It doesn't seem to me that there's enough lube in diesel to keep the crank wet? Either way as a maintenance engineer myself, I'm amazed at the size and precision. You would need a crane to put oil in it.
Ok, I got a question, here it is : wonder who gave them guys the technology to build something like this? It ain't no Honda ,and,is a long way from a transistor radio.

Thanks for the pics very interesting, enjoyed the post.

as well as samsung heavy equipment is now getting into containership and ice breaking engines. To give you some perspective, your diesel in your avarage tractor uses a 3/16" line to the fuel injectors for each cyl. , these can use 2" and larger lines! Theres a fuel bill!
