converter boxes

Can the FTA receivers be used as a converter box to receive the few channels available in your area for free without the 30" to 9' dish.

good call eloans, i read it wrong. Some HD boxes have a built in digital ota tuner but not your box. Converters are still cheap though.

Thanks but the question was for standard def boxes......You have to look into how the RF signal is processed because some SD boxes have an RF input but is the signal true bypass or does it pass through an analog>digital circuit before the output... like some vcr's do...if so it may work. Just have to try I guess. Also coverter boxes are extremely easy to make. You can get all of the parts at any electronics outlet. You can even get two sided copper circuit boards that come with the resist pen and etch solution (for creating your own trace) or just use a breadboard which is even cheaper and makes soldering unecessary. I'm probably going to make one myself if i ever get some time and I will post the plans if I get the chance...

Remember to hit the THANKS button if my post was helpfull (Or annoying...hehe)

So JP, am I to understand that this tv44 will alow your sat tuner to become a dtv tuner? The cw800 he speaks of has no ota tuner as im sure you know, and i know how diplexers work, I just always thought you still needed an outboard dtv tuner to process the signal before sending it to a non-dtv ready television? Great post guys. BG

This antenna will let you scan the receiver for local channels. So yes it will become a local Digital Box of some sort. This has worked in the past for many people and gives great results.

There are seeral variations of these antennas so do more research on them before investing, but they are great for blackout days. Especially if you hgave a HD STB.

Remember that this antenna will receive locals only up to 30 miles away from the STB so if you are in the middle of nowhere then just forget about this.

Hope this helps.
