This antenna will let you scan the receiver for local channels. So yes it will become a local Digital Box of some sort. This has worked in the past for many people and gives great results.
There are seeral variations of these antennas so do more research on them before investing, but they are great for blackout days. Especially if you hgave a HD STB.
Remember that this antenna will receive locals only up to 30 miles away from the STB so if you are in the middle of nowhere then just forget about this.
