CNX, I-Link, Satzen, Kbox Beta and Coolsat all were observed to drop on DN at a few minutes past 1PM Eastern Time yesterday. This is very much like the two events observed in December. At this time the details of the event are not fully known, but the adventure now continues for IKS coding and support teams. The Coolsat was quickly restored to service. CNX/Ilink/Satzen remained up on(fill in) but took massive freezing and is now down on most models. Unrelated the Sonicview iHub system has been working on the servers since last night and it remains up on some channels. The Sonysat server has also been offline waiting to put its upgrade online. The Dreambox DM100 was not impacted. Waiting on word from the Neosat EKS team, as it was down on DN prior to the time of this latest event.

Lookout for SonicView in 2009, they have some interesting plans in the works. According to internet rumors, Team SonicView is hard at work on a new “Magic Board” that promises to reduce the number of bin updates and somehow deal with the Nagra 3 (N3) updates. The new magic board should also reduce the turn around time for ECMs with some type of new patch system. The board is an actual piece of hardware that will fit inside the FTA receiver. Currently the team is testing on the 8000 and 360 series boxes but they hope to get the card working on more boxes. This will be sold, most likely, as an add-on optionally available. If all this sounds mysterious, you’re right. The announcement from Team Sonic View is most likely designed to keep people buying units without releasing enough detail to alert the other vendors to the secret details. Given the track record from TSV in the past, I’m really excited to see what they have come up with.
While Team SonicView is hard at work on their hardware solution, other vendors are working on software solutions. ViewSonic, who shares some software developers with other teams, is working on a solution called “EMU” or Emulation. In very over simplified terms, this is software that tries to guess and run the decoding of an ECM without knowing ahead of time what will be in the ECM. During recent ECMs several STB (Set Top Box) vendors were online within an hour and some never went offline due to “Partial EMU”. ViewSonic’s programmers are on the verge, according to an announcement they recently made, of Full EMU offering even better protection against ECMs. With little fan-fair, the Pansat SD3500 has been using EMU in recent builds with an amazing level of success and Conxsat has had EMU for a while. EMU, Full EMU and Full Map EMU don’t help with the N3 switchover but it it’s still the next step in the evolution of FTA.
Finally, Sammy just learned about a new program from CaptiveWorks. If you have a CW60s Premium or a variety of other receivers you may be eligible for a trade in credit. Many users have noted that safely shipping a heavy receiver like the CW4000HD back to CaptiveWorks for the credit may cost as much or more than the actual credit so investigate carefully. More information here:
It’s that time of year again and so it’s time to build my dream configuration.
Start with the Winegard 30” dish. This is an excellent dish for all major satellite providers and all FTA signals floating around in the sky.If the neighbors complain, I’d be just as happy with the 1000.2 DPP Triple LNBF.A single dish that automatically points to 110, 119, and 129 and includes the LNBF.
The CaptiveWorks 4000 HD receiver may be on the top of my wish list right now because the advanced living room entertainment features are far beyond what Sammy is used to.It’s hard to find this receiver in stock so Sammy would still be happy with a Sonicview 800 HD version 2.
Sammy still loves the DPP44 switch with the power inserter for the 2nd year running, I’m going with this one.
The most fun, Sammy wants to try the SadounDigipower SG2100 motorized dish mount this year it’s single control cable setup and “Go To X” DiSEqC 1.2 compatible technology.
Post your comments and tell N2News what your dream wish list is this holiday season.
N2News would like to wish all our members and non-members a very safe and HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

You’ll notice right away that this is actually a computer running specialize FTA software and it includes a wide range of software such a the Firefox web browser complete with Flash Player.Forgetting about FTA for a moment, the receiver is capable of a huge range of well thought out entertainment options.
The good: The CW-4000HD is built on the success of the 3000 series that has done very well. The interface is top notch as is the list of included software.Includes a full DVR allowing you to pause live TV as well as multiple ways to view the Electronic Programming Guide (EPG).An additional module provides support for encoding formats used on some satellite systems.
The bad: The boot time is very slow.Support and updates are not as fast as some receivers and the unit is a bit bulkier.
The ugly:This system is built on Linux and offers a huge range of features that are great for some but may be confusing if you have to explain them all to your parents.Requires internet access to be plugged into the unit although it can’t use IKS.
For about $500 you’re getting much more than an FTA receiver, you get a complete living room entertainment device. If you can get past the fact that the receiver and product line is so new that few people have and support it then you may find a great deal here.
